Training day together with Nature school

A beautiful cold and sunny day at the end of October a training day for teachers was held in Kronlund, Hällnäs. Teachers from Vindeln and Lycksele municipalities had gathered for a day of theory and practice around running water, the Vindel river and Vindel River LIFE. Elisabet Carlborg och Daniel Holmqvist spoke about our project and Lina Polvi, researcher at Umeå university, was talking about the ecology and geomorphology of streams.… Read more

Successful excursion with the reference group and our steering group

On 4 October the reference group of stakeholders and the project steering group met in Vindeln for a visit to restored areas in Hjuksån, a stream where a majority of the different restoration methods that we use in the project, are used or planned to be used; advanced restoration (Action C.1), dam removal (Action C.2), restoration of spawning areas (Action C.3) and habitat restoration (Action C.4).… Read more

Meeting for Swedish LIFE-projects in Ystad

The UC4LIFE and LIFE-Sand arranged a meeting for Swedish LIFE-projects 2-3 of October. In all, 14 financial and project managers from six projects were present. Focus was on sharing experiences and solving administrative and technical problems encountered by the projects. The meeting ended up with visiting some nice project sites at Österlen (see picture below).… Read more

Platform meeting in Ringsted, Denmark

The project leader Elisabet and the financial administrator Marie visited Ringsted on the 17th to 18th of September for the annual LIFE platform meeting. We were served the latest LIFE-news from the EC and heard presentations about the new Swedish and Danish LIFE projects. One and a half day were spend out in the field where we visited a couple of project sites: “LIFE Holmegards Mose” , “LIFE Overdrev II” (photo below) and the already finished project “Reflow”.… Read more

Post-doc Position in Stream Restoration Ecology

The position belongs to Vindel River LIFE and is for two years. The main task for the post-doc will be to analyse the effects on riparian vegetation of an advanced type of stream restoration in rapids, and to compare these with effects in rapids that have been restored in a more traditional way.… Read more

Collaboration with Naturskolan in Umeå

August 2829 Naturskolan in Umeå along with researcher Lina Polvi-Pilgrim (Umu) had activities for fifth graders from Lycksele. Lina talked about how a stream works and together with the pupils she used a home-made water flume and water, sand, stones and sticks to illustrate the function. Field work 2012

This year’s restoration work has been running for over two months and everything is going fine. Three dams in Beukabäcken (see photos below) and Sandsjö dam in Sågbäcken has been restored. Habitat and spawning area restoration has been done in Akersbäcken, Ribbikbäcken (see photos below), Vormbäcken, Månsträskån and Ruskträskbäcken. Work is also going on in Lill-Åman, downstream Kvarnåsen.… Read more
