Fish are spawning!

It has been reported that fish are spawning on many of the spawning beds which we have restored within the project. Usually fish spawn in the beginning of October but the water level is unusually high this year, which has led to warmer water than normal. Therefore it has taken longer for the water to reach the optimal spawning temperature (4-6 ˚C).… Read more

Information meeting

On the 28th of September the project invited researchers to a meeting at Hotel Forsen in Vindeln, where we informed about what restoration actions that have done so far in the tributaries and discussed possible research in the area. The school project

On the 22nd of September we did, together with Naturskolan, arrange a research meeting for two 5th-grade classes from Vännäsby. The day was spent outside, by and in a stream on the campus area of Umeå University. We ha assistance of two
researchers who work in stream: Christine Weber, who studies fish movement during winter time and Lovisa Lind, who studies the effect of ice on plants in the riparian zone and how this ice layer, and thereby plant species abundance and composition, is affected by stream restoration.… Read more

Platform meeting in Västerås

The project leader Johanna and the financial administrator Marie visited Västerås on the 12th to 13th of September for the annual LIFE platform meeting. This year’s host was Mia-Lake Mälaren Inner Archipelago. We were served the latest LIFE-news from the EC, got to hear about one new Swedish and two new Danish LIFE projects, and had the chance to discuss economic issues more thoroughly.… Read more

Check out the 360-images from our tributaries!

A picture is worth a thousand words..? This may be true but they also have their limitations. We find it difficult to use regular photos to demonstrate the structural effects of stream restoration. To improve the picture /image as a demonstration tool we have chosen to show 360-images from four sites that will be restored during the fall 2011.… Read more

Workshop in the field

On the 14th to 16th of June Vindel River LIFE arranged a workshop in Sorsele. The invited participants were machine foremen working for the project and people with restoration experiences, i.e. staffs from the County Administrative board of Västerbotten and from the counties along the river. During these three days streams that were subjected to advanced restoration during 2010 and areas that were planned to be restored during 2011 were visited.… Read more

Fieldwork summer 2011

The fieldwork is going very well! So far during the field season of 2011 we have, apart from working with stream restorations also removed migration obstacles in the two dams Rotenträskdammen in Sikbäcken and Kalvdammen (Lidsdammen) in Lidsbäcken. We also have personnel out in the field who measures current velocity, depths etc.… Read more

Information boards

We have now put up Information boards about the project at strategies sites along the Vindel River. Some of the locations were you can find it is: Vindeln (hotel Forsen), Åmsele, Björksele, Sorsele (tourist information), Vormforsen, Storforsen, Beukaforsen. You will also find it later this summer at Mårdseleforsen on the new official noticeboard for the nature reserve.… Read more

Research

We are pleased that many researchers have shown interest in the restoration work done by Vindel River LIFE. We can offer an infrastructure that is very useful for research as we have reference sites to all the Demonstration sites. On the 16th of May, members of the project’s steering group had a meeting with PhD students and researchers that are interested in working in the tributaries that have been restored by Vindel River LIFE.… Read more
